Azelia began way back in 1920 when Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify a small portion of the family vineyards in the heart of the Langhe, Castiglione Falleto.

Generation after generation continued to expand the family's vineyards until reached 16 hectares of vineyards and a total production of roughly 80,000 bottles (still minuscule by most winery standards).  The 5th generation of the Scavino family is again named Lorenzo, who is poised to take over the winery when his father Luigi retires.

Azelia makes wine from traditional, native grapes only (Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo), and has the pleasure of making five Barolo wines: Barolo DOCG, a blend of their four Cru vineyards, Barolo Bricco Fiasco in Castiglione Falleto (from a vineyard planted in the 1940's), Barolo San Rocco (a monopole vineyard in Serralunga), Barolo Margheria (a beautiful south-facing vineyard in Serralunga) and Barolo Riserva Voghera Brea (also a monopole vineyard in Serralunga, with vines more than 75 years old).  They also make old-vine, single vineyard Barbera and a beautiful old-vine, single vineyard Dolcetto which is one of the most remarkable examples of quality Dolcetto in the world.
