When it comes to Chardonnay, the Evening Land balancing act may be at is best here. Friendly and fresh, it is effortlessly open and pleasurable. Roundness and ripe fruit meet a lightning bolt of minerality for a Chardonnay of any occasion. Myriad yellow fruits – citrus, tree, tropical – merge with apple butter and salted biscuit, and while the palate follows suit, it lends acidity that slices through these elements with precision and a warm flicker of baking spice.

  The 2018 Chardonnay La Source comes from old vines on an east-facing slope at the bottom of the hill (Summum comes from the vines at the top of the hill). Its aromas of struck match and flint take time to open to golden apples, baklava and floral perfume. The medium-bodied palate also begins minerally, bright and fresh but broad and hinting at more to come. Give it another couple years in bottle.
