Il Mosnel- meaning rockpile in the local dialect- is a 5th generation winery, owned by the Barboglio family since 1836. Emanuela Barboglio, the "mother of Franciacorta," began estate bottling sparkling wines under the then-new Franciacorta DOC (this region achieved DOC status in 1967.) Prior to this, Il Mosnel was a polyculture farm, where grape-growing was only one portion of their production. Emanuela passed away in 2007, and the estate is now managed by her children, brother and sister Giulio and Lucia Barzanò.

The estate is now dedicated to viticulture and winemaking, with a deep respect for the environment. Il Mosnel seeks to make wines of balance and elegance and their vineyards, with a high proportion of limestone and glacial deposits, are where it all begins. The wines are 100% estate-bottled from their 40 hectares of vineyards that are planted to high densities, resulting in low yields per vine.  The vineyards are now certified organic, and Il Mosnel has received ITACA certification for their use of eco-friendly building materials and reduction in their overall carbon footprint.
